Mooring / Docking

Pre-maneuver checklist and the docking sequence.

Before the maneuver

  • Life jackets on
  • Gloves on
  • Assignments — everyone has one
  • Plan for the maneuver
  • Boat hook ready
  • All hatches closed for trip-free access
  • Lines ready
  • Fenders at correct height
  • Fender on leeward aft
  • All other activity — pause

Rules of the deck

  • One step at a time — don’t rush
  • If something goes wrong: pause, think
  • Never put a hand over the side
  • Never push off outside — use fenders only
  • Discuss the worst-case scenario and prepare for it
  • Neutral is your friend
  • The captain gives orders — don’t listen to people panicking on the dock

Docking sequence

  1. Windward aft line secure — 3–4 meters from the quay
  2. Use forward on the engine to hold the boat secure
  3. Forward mooring line — windward or leeward, whichever is further from the prop
  4. Second mooring line
  5. Leeward aft line secure — with slack
  6. Use reverse to test forward mooring lines — distance is right when about 1.5–2 m from the quay in reverse
  7. Tighten aft mooring lines
  8. Done
