Man Overboard

Immediate recovery drill — mark, turn, recover.

Big ideas

  • Mark position of MOB on the chart plotter
  • Leave a trail of floating things — throw the life ring, cushions
  • Get the boat turned around safely — sails down, engine on

Helm — immediate actions

  1. Yell “Man Overboard” — sound the horn
  2. Hit MOB on the B&G chart plotter (know how to do this)
  3. While watching the person, begin a 180° turn — TACK, do not jibe, into the wind
  4. Slow the boat down — let the sails free
  5. Turn the engine on

Other crew

  • Throw floaty things overboard — leave a trail: cushions, bumpers, life ring
  • Keep steady eyes on the person in the water
  • Ready a life jacket if the person is not wearing one

Captain

  • Instruct the helmsperson
  • Instruct others on how we will get the person aboard
  • Hit MOB on the chart plotter (instruct crew how to do this)
  • Initiate a MAYDAY distress call on VHF
