Helm — immediate actions
- Yell “Man Overboard” — sound the horn
- Hit MOB on the B&G chart plotter (know how to do this)
- While watching the person, begin a 180° turn — TACK, do not jibe, into the wind
- Slow the boat down — let the sails free
- Turn the engine on
Other crew
- Throw floaty things overboard — leave a trail: cushions, bumpers, life ring
- Keep steady eyes on the person in the water
- Ready a life jacket if the person is not wearing one
Captain
- Instruct the helmsperson
- Instruct others on how we will get the person aboard
- Hit MOB on the chart plotter (instruct crew how to do this)
- Initiate a MAYDAY distress call on VHF
